October 2nd, 2026 - January 1, 2027Louise Sheldon’s exhibition, Animal Songs, is titled after an 80’s record of folk songs: Froggy Went A' Courtin' - Animal Songs and Activities. Each song on the record is accompanied by a suggested activity, meant for children to embody animal behaviors. Trudie Richman, its vocalist, is known for recordings of international lullabies and for her contributions to Smithsonian Folkways Records[1]. Richman renders the fables in the intimate voice of traditional mid-century folk: naïve warmth, earnest poise. While the title track Froggy went a Courtin’ has been covered by myriad artists, among them Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Doc Watson, Nick Cave[2] in ways in turn frenetic, mocking and dark, Richman’s delivery hovers on an impossible threshold of nostalgia, refusing to unmask its animals to render satire vivid. Animals only partly subjugated to human passions might still act in a remainder of feral wonder.

Louise Sheldon’s watercolor monotypes embody that tension of partial masking. Her mixed depictions of object, animal and plant behaviors create unique conditions that melt into strange phenomena: they resolve into domestic recognizability only to become unbounded, overgrown. The personified forms escape, transiting as we linger to decipher them. We catch slippery winks from Tulip Pranksters to flowering Little Guys. Their fluid imprints leak onto nearby infected furniture.

The watercolor monotype transfer technique, allowing the reworking of a ghost on a gum Arabic plate, can reinforce replication without pinning things down. Stubborn jokes may reappear, yet Sheldon is more likely to remake her revenant characters from whole cloth than to reuse their image. The resulting home confusion carries the joys of a messy bake; pointillist mistakes turn into meadows. And why not wear the drapes, on a Confusing Saturday, as if they were a new mask around a fan-mouth? These days, we may as well blow air in a whooshing drone than speak using co-opted, tired language. In our dazzle-doom of domestic cos-play, pattern corruption and distorted floaters become our best tools. We can hope to encrypt hidden messages into their embodied wildness.

The collapsed quality of Swedish Chair, numbered to signal a stubborn recurrence in Sheldon’s work, carried me on another tangent. I was brought back to Les Aventures d' Alice au Pays des Merveilles, a 1970 adaptation produced by the Office de Radio Diffusion-Télévision Française[3]. An early example of blue screen compositing technology, this film’s psychedelic mix of live-action, overlaid on kaleidoscopic graphic backgrounds, frequently breaks the fourth wall-- giving a sense that anything can happen, even in a screen-thin stage. Like in Sheldon’s works, the resulting space is never fully enmeshed; it is a dissonant and surreal density experiment, out of sync with time.

Often, folk transmissions, like those of the eponymous title record, outlive any satire or political symbolism that spawned the tales. Through the longevity of repetition, the lossy afterimage sticks, floats and haunts more effectively than any original message. –by Aude Jomini

"Rhapsody began with one specific work of art and unfolded one artwork and one artist at a time, eventually including five artists with distinctive work. The idea was to put together these unique pieces to create a contemplative show that has a resonance between works, a powerful and lingering chord, a rhapsody that precludes words." – Mike Olin
